About Us

The Mobile Classroom is a band of teachers dedicated to providing free tutoring services for children who represent underserved populations. We are a new nonprofit based in Colorado with one representative on the front range and another one on the western slope. We established ourselves in June of 2011 and look forward to working with students in the coming school year.

Currently, the teachers on staff are certified to work with students in Kindergarten through 6th grade. As this new business expands, we hope to add on staff members who specialize in secondary education. We will work with your child in any subject. In order to be successful, teachers of The Mobile Classroom will maintain constant contact with your child's teachers and make sure that the lessons we form are consistent with both state standards and the benchmarks set by the school district your child attends.

A Bit of History

When founding a nonprofit there are personal experiences that can be traced back to a desire to serve a specific population.  We are teachers.  As new teachers, we have seen firsthand how difficult managing a classroom can be. Funds for schools are being cut drastically across the country. Positions are being eliminated, teachers are being laid off, and as an immediate result, classroom sizes are increasing dramatically.

In the past three years I have had no fewer than 30 students in my classroom. In addition, the school where I taught at is considered very high needs boasting a 90 percent ELL (English Language Learner) population as well as a staggering 100 percent free and reduced lunch program. These kids are on an uphill battle against poverty and learning a second language to reach the state standards expected of them.
In three short years, nearly all of the support staff has been eliminated. This means teachers have had to meet the needs of these students on their own. This leaves very little room for individualization. When a teacher is serving a population with such high needs, it is vital that each student gets the attention they deserve. However, between discipline problems, nerves over standardized test preparation, and administrative pressure, those children are not getting the attention they need.

In addition to all of these pressures, sometimes illness can be thrown into the mix, making academic success that much harder to achieve. For example, cancer is a disease that is on the rise all over the world. On a personal note, I have witnessed firsthand what the effects of this disease can have on a person. When I was 13, my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. She had two operations to remove it and was in remission. A few short years later, she was diagnosed with Stage IV breast cancer that had spread to her bones, liver and lungs. She fought valiantly for another 4 years before finally succumbing to the disease at the age of 52. I had just started my freshman year of college when I lost my mother.

The most common form of treatment to cancer is chemotherapy and it is as toxic for your body as the cancer itself. She lost her hair, her immune system collapsed, she had no energy and throughout this process, she had to stop working. It broke my heart to see my once vivacious hero suddenly become so incapacitated.

Throughout my three years of teaching, the bond with my students reminded me of how much you can love another person, and the thought of one of them going through a similar experience, which is now becoming so common, became a fear.  How, when someone is going through such horrendous treatment, can they be expected to reach their academic potential? At The Mobile Classroom, we seek to ease the burden that weighs on your children.
